Japan is not only a highly developed modern country, but also one of the world’s four largest economies and the only Asian country in the G7.
Japan, with its capital city of Tokyo, is an arc-shaped island nation located on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, stretching from northeast to southwest. It comprises four large islands—Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu—and over 6,800 smaller islands, covering a total area of 378,000 square kilometers. It comprises one metropolitan area, one prefecture, two prefectures, and 43 provinces. Japan’s climate is characterized by a temperate maritime monsoon climate, characterized by mild and humid weather year-round. Natural resources are scarce, and aside from a small amount of mineral resources, all other major raw materials and fuels needed for industrial production must be imported from overseas.
Japan is not only a highly developed modern nation, but also one of the world’s four largest economies and the only Asian country in the G7. As of January 2024, its total population was approximately 123.39 million, making it the only developed country besides the United States with a population exceeding 100 million. The predominant ethnic group is the Yamato people, Japanese is the common language, and Shintoism and Buddhism are the primary religions.
